How Your Roof Effects Your Hydro Bill

There are 2 significant factors to ensuring your money stays in your pocket when it comes to your roof, more specifically in your roof. Ventilation and Insulation!

Let's talk about the skeletons in the attic. Hopefully there aren't any! Your attic should be full of circulating air and insulation! The bottom outer corners of an attic have an aluminum material known as soffit. This is usually white with small slots and easily visible from the outside of your house. Spotted under your roofs edge, behind eavestroughs (if you have them). Soffit is your attics air intake. It's a large intake at all the bottom edges (eaves) of your roof and up the sides (gables). As air flows in it travels through a styrofoamor cardboard material known as a baffle. This material ensures insulation is not blocking the path of air flow. The air now circulates up through the attic to the highest areas where it pressurizes into confined space and exhausts from the vents we roofers are famous for installing.

A large issue in the roofing industry are roof vents. While homes are often still built with too few roof vents, the attic does not breath and becomes too warm in the summer and too cold in the winter. Causing the A/C and furnace to work harder which essentially means more money spent on hydro. Poor ventilation is also the leading cause of Ice Dams, which as the number 1 cause of winter roof leaks. Have your ventilation assessed. You know you require the help of a professional if your attic's temperature is 20 degrees over or under the outside temperature.

Now insulation is just as important as ventilation! Attic insulation should be measured at an R value of 30 (R30) according to Ontario building codes. Compressed, settled or lacking insulation may allow for cold and warm air to escape through your attic. Once again lightening your wallet. Printable R Value rulers can be easily found on Google. Be sure to measure your insulation depth from the plastic vapour barrier up. This can be easily completed with your ruler stapled or taped to a vertical support beam.
